Sergei Rachmaninoff (Rachmaninov in English) was a Russian composer born March 24th 1873. He went to a basic school in Moscow until he was 14.Then he ran off to live with his Piano teacher. His teacher, Nikolai Zverev would instill the habits that he followed for the rest of his life. Eventually he outgrew his teacher and Nikolai could no longer teach him as well.
He then, as a student, was accepted by Tchaikovsky to help work on his new play, Sleeping Beauty. Rachmaninoff wrote all the piano transcriptions for Tchaikovsky. To Rachmaninoff, Tchaikovsky was both a mentor as a friend. This is probably why his sudden death in 1893 caused Rachmaninoff great sorrow.
Rachmaninoff then wrote a long composition about Tchaikovsky. His first symphony was released in 1897 to the public. It was regarded as very bad. He went into a deep depression that lasted three years. He was then hired as an assistant composer for an Opera Club in Moscow. This was his break, from now on he would go on to music greatness.
He wrote many great Russian Etudes, Symphonies, and more. He is now known as being good because of his incredibly large hands, with odd bone structure.
