Donatello

Posted by Unknown

Donatello was an early Renaissance painter and sculptor from Florence, Italy. He was born in Florence to Niccolo Bardi. Although his birth date is unknown, people assume he was born in 1386. He received his early training in arts from a goldsmith's workshop. Then after he worked in Lorenzo Ghiberti's workshop. There isn't much known about Donatello's childhood. He then undertook study and excavation with Flippo Brunelleschi in Rome from 1404 to 1407. During this time he gained a reputation as a treasure hunter. On the side he worked at a goldsmith's shop.

Back in Florence, he started working for Lorenzo with the statues of prophets for the north door of the Florence Baptistry. From 1411-1413 he worked on a statue of St. Mark for a church. He sculpted various different saints in this period of his life. From 1415-1426 he composed 5 different statues, the last being "Crucifix", a replication of Jesus Christ in a moment of agony.

Soon after he was hired to make a statue of David. At the time of it's creation, it was the first known nude statue since ancient times. He continued to make various sculptures and paintings, although this is likely his most famous and substantial. He died in 1466, and was buried next to Cosimo de' Medici, the elder.

There isn't too much information about him on the internet. As it was so long ago I can't expect that there was much either. He made a lot of famous sculptures, but not many that are known well today. If you were to make a trip to Florence, you would be able to grasp a lot more about Donatello.
